Supermoto World Championships: Aprilia wins the S2 Class

With a 2nd and 1st place finish in the respective heats, Christian Iddon and the Aprilia SXV 5.5 made themselves heard in the S2 class of the Sea Alps Grand Prix.

In the S1, it was a solid performance for Jerome Giraudo (Aprilia SXV 4.5) who climbed atop the day’s 3rd-place podium while Thierry Van Den Bosch (Aprilia SXV 4.5) fell and finished 8th after his nice victory in Race 1.

Two successive heats, the day’s victory in the S2 class, and a 3rd place finish in the S1 was Team Aprilia Off Road’s bounty at the Sea Alps Grand Prix, the 7th stop of the FIM Supermoto World Championships that took place on Sunday, September 16th in Busca (province of Cuneo).
In Race 1 of the S1, Thierry Van Den Bosch (Aprilia SXV 4.5) took off from the grid in 2nd place and jumped into 3rd before becoming the protagonist of an impressive comeback.

He first passed Thomas Chareyre (Husqvarna) before obstructing the road and falling back to 3rd.  VDB didn’t lose spirit and climbed back into 2nd place, hot on the heels of Adrien Chareyre (Husqvarna).  Turn after turn he tore up the track before making his move with five laps until the end, riding his Aprilia SXV 4.5 to victory.  In the same heat, it was a solid 3rd place finish for Jerome Giraudo (Aprilia SXV 4.5) who came back from his initial 6th place start.

At the start of Race 2, VDB was boxed in coming out of the starting grid and was forced into 4th place.  Halfway through the race, he tried a different approach as he attempted to pass Ivan Lazzarini but ended up on the ground after making contact with the curb with his pedal.  He took off a bit slower and finished in 8th place.  It was 4th place for Giraudo who, thanks to his finish, climbed atop the 3rd highest podium of the day’s S1 class.  He also conquered 4th place overall in the international ranking.

In Sunday morning’s S2 class, Christian Iddon (Aprilia SXV 5.5) took off on the right foot as he marked the Super Pole with a time of 1:20.649.  He finished 2nd in Race 1 after a nice battle with Davide Gozzini (Tm).  It was a prelude to the success he earned in Race 2, leading to his victory of the S2 Sea Alps Gp.  In fact, Iddon was determined from the start; he was in 2nd place until the 10th lap when he took command of the race, passing Gerald Delepine and winning a deserved fraction and grand prix.

Team Aprilia presented itself at the international engagement with the latest evolution of the officials SXVs with exhaust collectors fortified with condensers to make the motorcycles even faster and easier to handle while accelerating and with new, dedicated mapping systems.  Also promised in the near future is the adjustable aluminum frame (already used in races) for a motorcycle that is ever-more adaptable to the riders’ style of riding.  The three official SXVs also flaunted a new look in preview of the colors used for the 2008 series motorcycles that included an even more captivating and “racing” graphic.
With just one trial left until the end of the season (as a location has not yet been decided for the gp initially scheduled to take place on October 7th), the world championship will be decided on October 21st at the Athens Gp in Greece as Van Den Bosch will seek to recuperate 27 points on Adrien Chareyre in order to again be crowned the S1 champion.  In the S2, Iddon finds himself in 4th place, some 26 points behind Delepine (the new championship leader), but still in the hunt for the podium zone.
