Young Spanish rider Luis Salom celebrated his first victory in the Red Bull Rookies Cup race at Assen on Saturday after a dramatic finish to the race for tomorrow's motorcycle stars.

Americans Cameron Beaubier and Kris Turner took the minor places. Although Turner was officially first through the checkered flag at the end of the 16-lap race, he was penalized five seconds for gaining an advantage for cutting a corner.

Championship leader Lorenzo Savadori and his arch rival Johann Zarco continue to lead the series standings but both were unlucky in the race on the Dutch circuit when they were taken out on the last lap following a mistake by Sweden's Robert Gull. Gull, who had been up with the front runners until that point exited the race after his crash but both Savadori and Zarco got back on their bikes and finished eleventh and thirteenth.

German rider Lucy Gloeckner, the only girl in the competition, finished in ninth place.

Only 21 of the 23 specially selected junior riders competing in the Rookies Cup competition started the race in front of the huge crowd at the Assen Moto GP circuit.
Spain's Kevin Sanchez is still suffering from the effects of a last season's crash and failed to qualify. Germany's Christoph Schoenberger is still recovering from a shoulder injury and will rejoin the competition when it competes at the Sachsenring.
