Scoring another pair of good results during the GP of Spain, David Vuillemin claimed his best GP result this season with a seventh place in Bellpuig, two places ahead of Gareth Swanepoel.
A regular venue for the World Championship for fifteen years in a row, the Catalan track welcomed the 2009 Grand Prix paddock with the best climate conditions; hot temperatures and nice weather all through the weekend.
Both Gareth and David struggled in the MX1 qualifying Heat, missing good starts and having some trouble to find places to pass their rivals on the track. With only one narrow dry line on most of the layout it was difficult to rise through the order, and both Gareth and David finished the race where they started, in thirteenth and fifteenth positions. Seventh at the beginning of the Heat, Gregory Aranda just lost one ranking on the last lap.
The CLS rider would be the first to retire during the opening moto, as he collided with the bikes of Leok and De Dycker in the waves section and retired with a damaged motorcycle. Eighth and twelfth during the first lap Gareth and David could this time move higher up the standing and at mid race distance they were in fifth and sixth position respectively, battling with Coppins and Nagl. During the last ten minutes Vuillemin passed Swanepoel to collect a strong fifth position; both recording their best results of the term so far.
Their second race was not as positive with the ‘green duo’ taking their time to find the right lines during the first laps. Once again Gareth and David found themselves battling at mid-race. The Frenchman moved to ninth position ahead of Aranda who completed the race in the top ten, while Swanie secured his best overall result of the season with an eleventh position. Vuillemin and Swanepoel are currently ninth and eleventh in the standings, two weeks prior to the British Grand Prix in Mallory Park, while Gregory is in fifteenth position.
David Vuillemin: ‘The last time I came here was in 1998 and Bellpuig has not changed, with a dry line among the mud, even if we have a sunny weekend! I didn’t have a good qualification, I hit several neutrals during the race and finished only fifteenth. I had my best start so far in the first heat, then took a good rhythm and came up to fifth right behind Coppins during the last laps. The next start was perhaps the worst but I passed Swanepoel and finished close to Desalle and Coppins. I scored my best GP result, that’s good for me mentally and I’m sure that I can reach a top five position with decent starts as I was strong physically again here.’
