Ken De Dycker flew to his second Pole Position of the season at a warm Agueda circuit for the Grand Prix of Portugal and the fifth round of the 2009 FIM MX1 World Championship.
The Belgian, and current sole representative of the squad, steered his RM-Z450 to victory in the Qualification Heat by taking part in an exciting and close race with Josh Coppins and Clement Desalle.
The red terrain at the venue one hour south of Porto proved to be hard and slippery, providing a few tyre and suspension set-up headaches for the MX1 field. De Dycker was content with his configuration and alternated Pirelli choice; marking the 5th and 4th fastest times in the two practice sessions.
The heat started in dramatic fashion as De Dycker made a mediocre getaway and needed to fight from 15th to 6th in a frantic first lap. He then pushed up to second and shadowed Coppins in the final stages, taking advantage of the presence of a backmarker to overtake the New Zealander and seal his second pole of the year and thus first position in the gate for Sunday.
The cloudy but bright conditions are again forecast for tomorrow.
Ken De Dycker: "I had some good results last weekend and it gave me some confidence coming here. My start wasn't so great but I could come through OK and felt comfortable out there. Sylvain joked to me that I now have the work of two riders and I suppose I am big enough for that! We can hope for a decent race tomorrow."
