Bright sunshine and warm temperatures greeted the 250cc riders on Friday for their opening practice session in Mugello. The Italian Grand Prix kicked off with Álvaro Bautista as the fastest man on track, fighting off challenges from Marco Simoncelli, Hiroshi Aoyama and Héctor Barberá.
After Gábor Talmácsi's official departure from the Balatonring team, the outfit brought in Balazs Nemeth as the replacement for his fellow Hungarian. The former supersport and Superstock rider made his World Championship debut in the session, although he had a tough learning curve with the Aprilia RSA to overcome and was unable to reach the 107% provisional qualification mark.
Balazs Nemeth: "This first encounter has been a tough one, because everything was completely new for me. From the team to the bike and the track, it was a lot to get used to. I'd never ridden a two stroke before, so I spent the entire session adjusting my riding position and style on the Aprilia. I improved step by step, but there wasn't much time to improve. I hope to continue getting better tomorrow, in order to have a good race on Sunday."
