GP Sachsenring: spectacular comeback for Alvaro Bautista for podium finish

Rain in Germany made the 250cc race yet another wet affair, a regular occurrence in the 2008 season. In the final race before the summer break, the 250cc riders had a warm up under damp conditions and were thrown in at the deep end in a soaking Grand Prix. The winner of the race was Marco Simoncelli, ahead of Héctor Barberá and Álvaro Bautista.

Álvaro Bautista had a great race, despite not repeating his Assen victory. For the first time in 2008 he was starting from off the front row, in fifth place, but his chances of a win were further hit by a disastrous start that relegated him to seventeenth. After too extremely slow laps, the Spaniard finally found his pace and began the fightback. In just four laps, the Mapfre Aspar rider had worked his way up to ninth, and with six laps remaining he was back amongst the podium spots. His just reward was third place and elevation of another World Championship spot, increasing his points total to 118.

A solid run was in order for Héctor Faubel, Bautista's teammate. The 250cc rookie came home in 14th place after a weekend full of changes, tweaks and fine tuning to his Aprilia machine. He was aiming for a top ten finish, but fell just short with a result still respectable on such a difficult day for riding.

The next race for the 250cc category takes place in over a month's time, at Brno in the Czech Republic.

3rd Álvaro Bautista: "I think that today we had a very good result. The first two laps were very slow for me because II just couldn't find any feeling, and the bike was stepping out on the front and rear. At the start it was hard to ride, but as the race went on I felt stronger and more confident as I tried to make up positions. I am happy with the result, but above all I am pleased to have been able to bounce back from a difficult position. At the end of the race I was set on second, but then the pace picked up and I didn't want to take a big risk. It was much more important to finish third than to take a gamble and not finish."

Héctor Faubel: "In the practice sessions all weekend I was going well. We reverted to the configuration that we used in Catalunya, and every little change made me feel better with the Aprilia. In the dry I felt strong enough to be in the trailing group, and it's a pity that it rained when it did. We weren't able to see the true potential of our hard work. The result today serves to improve our experience in the category and in the wet, and the tracks that are coming up after the summer break are ones that I like and think that I will continue to do well at."
