Searle challenges MX2 superiority of Italy's Cairoli in Sweden
Showing very little respect for the man who has dominated the MX2 world championship competition this season, the cheeky young Briton finished with almost a three second advantage in heat one. Searle was fifth in the second moto to be classified in second overall, his top podium position so far this season. "I got away quite cleanly in the first heat and I was able to take the lead," The talented British teenager said. "I managed to stay in front of Cairoli and I was able to use the lines that Stefan Everts told me to use and that was very helpful." Everts, himself 10-time world champion, is now boss of the KTM Red Bull MX team and is able to pass on his own valuable experience to the factory riders. Clearly upbeat about coming in ahead of Cairoli, Searle said he was not intimidated by the championship leader and he definitely has ambitions to work towards higher podium positions. Teammate Tyla Rattray was not so lucky. He got away well in the first heat but he tangled with Cairoli in the first corner and twisted his knee quite badly. In quite a lot of pain, he retired to have the knee checked by the doctor. Rattray did go on to tackle the second heat, reinforced with painkillers. His training with starts is also clearly paying off. Despite the injured knee, he got away well again and took the hole shot, charging through the second heat to finish in third place and ninth overall on the day. Rattray will have his knee thoroughly checked out on Monday and undergo some physiotherapy treatment. The South African still has the edge on the younger Searle in the season's standings. Rattray is third with 318 points and Tommy Searle is now in fourth place, closing on him with 285. Another rider with an excellent result in Sweden was Germany's Marcus Schiffer, who is factory supported by KTM Germany. Schiffer finished overall third for the day, declaring it to be the best race of his career so far. "I have been training hard. We've been making adjustments to the bike and I am very happy with it," Schiffer said. "My goal for the season is to finish in the top ten in the standings." Schiffer is looking forward to sand tracks and said the experience training with Stefan Everts during the winter was very positive for him. Results 1. Antonio Cairoli, Italy, Yamaha 2. Tommy Searle, Britain, KTM 3. Marcus Schiffer, Germany, KTM 4. Christophe Pourcel, France, Kawasaki 5. Davide Guarneri, Italy, Yamaha 9. Tyla Rattray, South Africa, KTM |
