Chris Vermeulen speaks about his amazing pole position efforts in final qualifying for the A-Style Dutch Grand Prix.
Once again the 25 year old Australian continued his impeccable record in wet conditions, just pipping compatriot Casey Stoner for P1 ahead of tomorrow’s race.
That Lap. “I was comfortable out there and building up my pace slowly, it was all about getting heat into the tyres and I was doing that. I saw that the fastest time was a 48.5 by Stoner, the rain was just spitting a bit, but I thought it’s alright. I had to pass Valentino on that lap so that made it a bit slower. The start of the quick lap wasn’t as good, the rain was coming down so I really put my head down and pushed hard and the bike was sideways in a lot of places. I got a 48.5 and I didn’t know if it was quicker than Casey or not . I slowed down because the rain was getting heavier and the wind was really strong and I saw the screen and it said “Vermeulen 1”. I thought shit if it rains til the end of the session we’re in good stead here. The wind picked up and it pushed the bikes around a lot and it was quiet difficult.”
Quick wet session. “Only 10 seconds off what I was doing in the dry and the track was completely wet. It was a lot grippier than Donington it took me a lot of time to get up to speed.”
On being the rain master. “We have been very fast in the rain. It’s good to be fast in any conditions, but I’d like to be a little bit quicker in the dry around here. We’ve struggled so far this weekend but we’ve made a lot of progress with the bike and it’s just little, little things, with electronics and chassis settings. We made big steps this morning, I don’t expect to go out and win it if it’s dry but I know we can be very competitive.”
