125 Mugello: Honda riders team quotes
![]() Tommy Koyama (KTM) got the jump on the rest of the grid from the start, but it wasn’t long before he faded as Gabor Talmacsi (Aprilia) took the lead only for Faubel to then take control of matters. Mike di Meglio (Scot Honda RS125R), who qualified on the front row crashed out of contention on lap four, while his team-mate Dino Lombardi had succumbed to a fall on lap one. By lap six a ten-rider group was covered by a mere 1.5 seconds. Faubel led, but the positions at this early stage were largely meaningless with 14-laps to go. Of more importance was Bradley Smith’s (Repsol Honda RS125R) effort to get on terms with the leading group. Smith rode a mature race to finish eighth at the flag having tried everything to haul in the lead group. He will be in good shape to get properly on terms with the main men next weekend in Catalunya and then at his home race at Donington Park a week after that. Smith said, “It’s been a bad weekend also a long and difficult race. My start was OK but in the first few laps I made too many mistakes and the leading group was gone. I tried to stay on the back of them and I found a good rhythm but the gap between myself and the group was up -and-down, we were all running the same laps times. Not a positive result but you have to finish to take points.” Faubel leads the World Championship standings with 102 points to Talmacsi’s 95, with Lukas Pesek (Derbi) who crashed on the last lap here on 91 points. Simone Corsi has 71 points in fourth overall, while Smith lies eighth with 44. Bradley Smith, Repsol Honda: 8th.Its been a bad weekend and also a long and difficult race. My start was OK but in the first few laps I made too many mistakes and the leading group was gone. I tried to stay on the back of them and I found a good rhythm but the gap between myself and the group was in-and-out, we were all running the same laps times. Not a positive result but you have to finish to take points. Joey Litjens, Molenaar Honda: 16th.“My start was not so fast but the bike was good and I was running constant lap times and I caught the group and I was riding well. Into the last lap I was 16th just behind Aegerter and intended to try to pass him from the slipstream on the last lap but I missed my first World Championship point by just 0.052s – that leaves a sour taste.” Danny Webb, Molenaar Honda: 21st.“I made a super start and running with a full tank over the opening laps I was faster than I had been all weekend. After that I was running a second faster than at anytime and things were going really well. But I made two mistakes and lost the group. Then in the middle of the race I found a fast rhythm in 2m 03s. It was not my best race, 21st but my best GP result. Next week in Barcelona is my time because I know the circuit after two years in the Spanish Championship.” Tito Rabat, Repsol Honda: Rabat did not participate in the Italian GP due to injuries sustained at the French GP at Le Mans two weeks ago. He is hoping to make his return to the track at his home race, the GP of Catalunya, next weekend. Mike Di Meglio, Kopron Scot Honda: dnf – crash.“Straight after the start De Rosa touched me and I ran straight and lost touch with the group ahead of me. I got back on line and tried to get back to the man group but I crashed on the fourth lap.” Dino Lombardi, Kopron Scot Honda: dnf – crash.“I got a good start with Mike (Di Meglio) and Cortese but at one corner I ran wide and finished in the gravel trap. I crashed and hit my head – that’s why they took me to the hospital for an x-ray to check for possible consequences. But I am OK and will race at Catalunya next week.” Alexis Masbou, FFM Honda: dnf – crash.“It’s a pity because I had a good start, but in the first corner Mike Di Meglio’s bike and mine touched. That put me off the racing line and many riders were able to pass me. I didn¹t have too much feeling with the front and in the opening laps I wasn’t confident at all. One must say that because of my crash during practice I didn’t do many laps on a dry track and we didn’t have enough time to set up the bike for this configuration. This morning in the warm-up we tested a smaller tyre that seemed OK. Halfway through the race I started getting used to the way my Honda was reacting and I gave it all I had in order to recover a few positions. Unfortunately I lost the front entering the first chicane and ended up crashing.” |
